State (magazine)
State.ie (formerly State Magazine) is an Irish website and formerly a monthly music magazine, which launched in April 2008 and ceased to print in January 2009 having published a total of ten issues. The magazine continues online and was voted Best Music Site in 2008 and Best Web Publication in 2010 in the Irish Web Awards. Originally the concept of the magazine involved a hard copy of which there was a charge to purchase, however after six issues it was decided to make the magazine's content free both online and in print. The first issue, April 2008, appeared on Irish shelves on 6 March 2008 and featured Michael Stipe of R.E.M. on the cover. This immediately garnered comparisons between the new magazine's similarities with Hot Press who featured Stipe on their cover at the same time, a move widely thought to be an attempt by Hot Press to stifle State's status as a serious 'alternative' to the more established local magazine. At a price of €5.50, State charged €2 more than Hot Press.

● The owners' right to stop others from copying, manufacturing, selling or importing their invention without their permission.
● Keeping competitors at bay.
● licensing or selling a patent in return for revenue.
ARIPO Patent Governing Law
ARIPO patents are granted on behalf of the member states of the Harare Protocol on Patents, Designs and Utility Models, which was adopted on December 10, 1982 in Harare, Zimbabwe and entered into force in 1984.
Under the protocol, a patent applicant can designate any one of the Harare Protocol Member States in which the applicant wishes the invention to be protected, by filing one application.
A patent application under the protocol can be made directly with the ARIPO Office in Harare, Zimbabwe or in any one of the following 20 Contracting States:
● Botswana, Cape Verde, Kingdom of Eswatini, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Kingdom of Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Validity
An ARIPO patent is valid for 20 years from the date of application, subject to payment of annual fees during the period of validity.

“An authorized representative is a patent attorney, agent or legal practitioner who is duly recognized by the national IP office of the Contracting State of Harare Protocol as having the right to represent the applicant.
Contents of an ARIPO Patent Application

So what is a patent? This video explains what a patent is, what patents can protect, and how you can get one for yourself. If you want to protect your ideas and inventions, this video will give you the basics of how a patent can help you do this.
Put simply, a patent is a limited monopoly, granted by the government, that allows the owner to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering to sell or importing the patented invention into the country or region that granted the patent. The video includes:
- Patents are a negative right
- Limited term that cannot be extended
- Patents are enforceable only in the specific country that granted the patent
-What things can be patented?
- Patents are a form of IP or Intellectual Property
-Trademarks, Copyrights, & Trade Secrets are the other three types of IP
- Patents protect utilitarian inventions whereas copyrights protect artistic works
- Trademarks protect names, logos or other marks that differentiate goods and services
-Patents protect a wide variety of utilitarian inventions
- You can only get a US patent by filing a patent application at the USPTO
- The patent will be granted if the invention is new and non-obvious in view of prior art.

Validity
An ARIPO patent is valid for 20 years from the date of application, subject to payment of annual fees during the period of validity.
Procedures for Filing of a Patent
Filing an application
“An application may be filed by the inventor or their assignee. This can be done either in person or through an authorized representative.”
“An authorized representative is a patent attorney, agent or legal practitioner who is duly recognized by the national IP office of the Contracting State of Harare Protocol as having the right to represent the applicant.
Contents of an ARIPO Patent Application
The application for registration of a patent should be made on ARIPO Form 3 - Request Form and must contain the following:
● designation of at least one state
● a description of the invention
● one or more claims
● one or more drawings, if any
● an abstract
● prescribed application fees or a written undertaking to lodge the fees
Ways of filing
Applicants can be filed directly at ARIPO through the following ways:
● e- filing
● email
● in person
● registered mail and
● courier
Applications can also be filed through any of the Contracting States of the Harare Protocol.
ARIPO Online filing
ARIPO’s online filing system allows e-filing of industrial property applications, online payment of fees, receiving of file updates or notifications and general tracking of applications.
Value of online filing
The e-filing option comes with an added benefit of a 20% reduction on the application fees.
